The Haircuts
If you have a tried and true haircut, you probably already know the drill, but if you’re making a change—we’re here for it.
Short Hair: Pixies: 4-8 Weeks
Shorter, more structural cuts like bobs or pixies usually need trims more often to stay in shape. For Pixies plan for every 4-6 weeks and every 6-8 weeks (or sooner) for bobs. This is because they often feature face framing shapes and blunt lines so as your hair grows, it does so unevenly, and therefore needs to be shaped.
Medium to Long: 8-12 Weeks
Mid-lengths or longer layers can stretch the time as they see fit but usually every 8-12 weeks is ideal depending on hair type and health. Generally speaking for longer bobs a.k.a. lobs or mid-lengths you’ll want to trim every 8-10 weeks, while long layers can stretch from 8-12.
Textured/Layers: 8-12 Weeks
Texture and layers play a big part in how often you’ll need to trim. Softer shapes like shags and subtle layers are naturally more soft so they can be cut every 8-12 weeks. The same timeline goes for curly hair because these texture types hide regrowth well.
Fringe/Face Frames: 1-5 Week
If you have a face frame or fringe, you’ll need to see your stylist more often. Fringe or bangs are determined by length and shape. Similar to bobs and pixies, the shorter and more structured, the more often you’ll need a trim, while the softer and longer fringe and face-frames can go for longer. Straight bangs or short fringe might need a trim every 1-2 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows while curtain fringe or longer fringe can be trimmed every 3-5 weeks.
As a rule of thumb, the shorter and more precise the more often you’ll need to visit the salon and the longer and more relaxed the longer you can go between trims. Just remember, that if your hair isn’t styling how it normally does—this is the tell-tale sign that you need a trim. When selecting a cut, these should be factored in to determine investment and upkeep in terms of timing and budget. Additionally, choose a haircut that works with your hair type and lifestyle. If you don’t have the time or patience to style your cut the way it’s intended you won’t love it—and that’s the whole point of any style—to love it.
