Story
In February of 2021 severe winter storms hit Texas resulting in a major power crisis causing more than 4.5 million homes and businesses to lose power, some for days. Our electrical grid was simply not prepared for the freezing temperatures it had dropped to.
Gold & Braid Salon is conveniently located next to a hospital which puts us on the same grid, so my salon never lost power or running water. Even though my home had been without power for 24 hours at that point, I knew others have been without for days and I wanted to offer my space as a safe place to warm up and receive a free shampoo and blowdry.
I posted on as many groups and resource pages I could find to offer this service, and I found a ton of support for what I was doing, as well as a lot of people seeing the value of just having clean hair in such an uncertain time. I welcomed each guest with a space heater and warm blanket, and was even able to recommend other resources for whatever they were in need of at that time. Gold & Braid Salon was then established as a safe space for whatever my community needs at any given time.
