The Brentwood Hairdresser
5 st Thomas rd

We dream of being as sustainable as possible and our efforts have been recognised in the industry, naming The Brentwood Hairdresser as the most sustainable salon 2020! Our strategy from day one has been to provide an amazing space in which to get your hair done whilst simultaneously sticking to our core values. This started when we discovered Kevin Murphy and immediately cemented a strong relationship with them. These guys have the right attitude! Totally cruelty-free, no nasty stuff, and all packaging is made using OWP so it felt great to connect with like-minded professionals. However very quickly we noticed the amount of waste being generated from the rest of the salon services was too much for me to cope, with so I started investigating how we could reduce our waste and thought of my buddy @kycutwilson, who had come across The Green salon collective. TBH was the first salon in Essex to sign up for this project and we're super proud to be a part of this family. Now every week we send a box of hair, used foils, tint tubes, and any other aluminum to be recycled. This way we're sure to recycle as much as we possibly can. In addition, we have partnered up with a local refill station to refill all our laundry detergent, washing liquid,x and hand soap throughout the salon. We use re comb tools in salon that are made from 100% recycled plastic and their packaging is totally recycled too! Several team members are on a subscription package to Leaf Scissors. This is a great idea where you pay for scissors in installments, and by signing up, they ensure that for 24 months one tree is planted every month. (1000’s have now been planted)
However, our most significant change for the better has been after lockdown. Whilst every other salon opted to put large perspex screens in place, we have made huge living walls to keep our clients socially distanced. So zero landfill and air purifying as well! (but most importantly have you seen 'em? They're lush) We also serve our drinks in recycled glass, recycle our coffee pods and use a digital magazine service to avoid landfill.
The green salon collective is paid for by every client paying £1 on their bill so the whole process is taken care of with no cost to me or the business
our refill shop offers me refills at cost price because we both promote each other on social media so she considers the exposure worth the cost
our green screens (or planters) were made by a friend who has traded the cost for haircuts from me so no cost whatsoever
as for the plants the green house brentwood have provided the amazing plants and there all for sale so the cost has been almost nothing
in my early years as a freelance hairdresser i used to trade cuts for all sorts of things and still love this exchange of skills instead of money changing hands.
All team members are fully on board with our green approach and care deeply about the impact we’re making I believe the team contribute with almost no instruction from me instead realising that we need to is take responsibility for what we’re doing on a daily basis and of course our regular story updates keep everyone in the loop with our eco efforts.
Our team regularly meet for beach clean ups and even Albert the salon dog is trained to collect rubbish from the beach !! we document these meets on social media so every can see what we’re up too outside the salon as well as when we’re on the shop floor
All team members are fully on board with our green approach and care deeply about the impact we’re making , I believe the team contribute with almost no instruction from me instead realising that we need to is take responsibility for what we’re doing on a daily basis
After successfully working with Brentwood council to introduce a plastic recycling service from business addresses , we can now recycle straight from the salon (rather than taking it home)
We’re working towards a zero waste to landfill goal and the whole team are working together on this to achieve it, both at home and at work
Our hard work must have been recognised as I’ve been approached to join the WE LOVE team art team as a spokesperson for sustainable salons and will be educating other salon teams and owners on how to reduce their salons impact
As we’re now accredited by the green salon collective and are involved in splash ya trash days’
Where we meet up to do beach cleans
We’re also able to recycle ppe face masks
And will forever more be founder members of the green salon collective working to reduce our impact on the planet.
My passion for being the most sustainable salon in Essex has gone though the roof after winning the award last year and now the team have gone next level !
Yes We we’re the first salon in Essex to sign up to the green Salon collective but now we’re the only accredited salon in Essex !!
We’re the only salon in the UK to use living walls in upcycled crates as dividers between sections during the Covid 19 outbreak (so no plastic to landfill)
We work exclusively with Kevin murphy the only product company to make packaging from ocean waste OWP
We all use a leaf subscription to pay for scissors a s a tree is planted every month for each member of staff we avoid single use plastic where ever possible
By teaming up with a local refill station for hand wash washing liquid ect
