One of our longtime clients is the Executive Director of a nonprofit organization called Gateway HorseWorks, which incorporates horses for the mental health treatment of people treating issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, PTSD, grief/bereavement, and sexual trauma. In addition to individual and family sessions, Gateway HorseWorks offers a number of free community programs in partnership with the Chester County Prison, Chester County Children, Youth, and Family Services, the Crime Victims Center of Chester County, Recovery Centers of America at Devon, the Salvation Army's Anti-Human Trafficking Program, Penn Hospice, and most recently, offering services for clinical and non-clinical hospital workers on the frontlines of the pandemic.
My passion for the industry grew when I started to make personal, meaningful relationships with my clients and realized my reach can go far beyond their hair. Over the years Salon Nova has organized events and contributed donations to a variety of causes and it remains an important value to me as a team leader to stay connected in our community. As a business owner and stylist I encounter new people everyday and feel the need to help make positive connections between them. We live in a world of accessible information but sometimes a personal testimony or shared experience from someone they trust can be the spark someone needs to make a change in their life.
Once we reopened after the COVID-19 shutdown, I wanted to find a way to give back knowing how many people already struggle with mental health and especially after experiencing a global pandemic. We sold chocolate bars to clients which gave them an entry for a chance to win a free haircut if their chocolate had one of five “golden tickets” inside and then their name would also be entered in the raffle to win a $150 Salon Nova gift card. The chocolate bar wrappers had a photo and name of each of the Gateway service horses; coincidentally there was a pony named Nova! Our clients were incredible and really participated in full force. It was more than we could have hoped for, especially considering the past year everyone experienced during the pandemic. In the end we were able to raise $500 for Gateway Horseworks!
“Gateway HorseWorks is a nonprofit organization which incorporates horses for the mental health treatment of people. Many of the clients who seek out our services do so because traditional mental health interventions have fallen short or have been rendered ineffective because of trauma. Now more than ever, people need access to a variety of solutions to meet their individual wellness goals. The funding and awareness raised by Salon Nova has enabled Gateway HorseWorks to extend reduced or free sessions to children, adolescents, adults, and families through individual sessions and community-based programs serving justice-involved youth and adults, dependent youth, people in recovery, Veterans, first responders, and people experiencing homelessness." – Kristen de Marco Executive Director
