Story
Tucked away in Brisbane's leafy Southern suburbs you'll find our sweet little Eco Hair studio – Olive Eco Hair, a calm and relaxing hair oasis – https://www.oliveecohair.com.au/
Established in 2012 by Jade Atia – An expert with over 20 years in the hair industry and mother of two, with a burning passion for a healthy lifestyle.
Having been on her own personal health and wellbeing journey and choosing natural, clean products in every part of her life, Jade felt called to start a holistic salon, using natural and ethical products that care for her clients & the earth while creating beautiful hair.
Our Ethos
Healthy hair, healthy body and a healthy planet – it’s all connected.
While remaining fashion-focused, we are aware of the impact that hair care has on the planet and aim to reduce our carbon footprint.
With this in mind, we have set out to create the perfect balance between high-performance eco-products and beautiful, healthy hair. Our low tox and biodynamic products are carefully chosen for their high performance, to only deliver beautifully nourished healthy hair.
The products we have chosen are – Naturally derived where possible and sustainably sourced. Our philosophy is to treat your hair and skin with luxury products free from ammonia, parabens, sulphates and other toxic and harmful chemicals. With this in mind we have only been using the highest quality of premium products worldwide for our colour – Color.Me by Kevin Murphy and for all our styling and after care – Kevin.Murphy & Organic Colour Systems.
We Are Sustainable Salon
At Olive, we harness Queensland’s beautiful weather in every way possible. Our 30 square meter salon is fitted with large glass doors and locally salvaged windows allowing a breezy airflow and flooding the salon with natural light to minimise artificial lighting and air conditioning.
We use solar power where possible, recycle 95% of our salon waste and choose products that are naturally derived, organic, toxin-free, cruelty-free and vegan.
At Olive we use:
~ Organic, herbal cleaning products
~ Biodegradable gloves
~ Reusable stainless steel coffee pods
~ Compostable herbal teas
~ Recycled foil
~ Water reduction systems at the basin
95% of our Salon waste is recycled, repurposed or reused through a revolutionary resource recovery program Sustainable Salons Australia – https://sustainablesalons.org/ Which we are incredibly proud to be a part of.
SSA continues to expand across Australia and New Zealand with more and more salons joining the movement of creating zero waste.
What do they do with our waste…
All the proceeds from recycling the salon’s materials get donated to not-for-profit community-based organisations that do a killer job helping humanity.
~ @OzHarvest provides meals for hungry Australians.
~ Plastic product bottles, packaging and bags are recycled into outdoor furniture and underground sheeting.
~ Any leftover chemicals are recycled into water and used in construction or roadworks.
~ Once our tools reach the end of their life, they are broken down and all valuable parts are repurposed.
~ Cut off hair is made into hair booms (stockings filled with hair) and used to support charitable causes such as oil spill clean-up projects, local community gardens for composting purposes.
~ Ponytails are donated to charitable wig making services so cancer and alopecia sufferers can have locks too.
Since joining Sustainable Salons Australia in December 2016, Olive Eco Hair has been on a mission towards ZERO WASTE.
This is what our sustainability impact has contributed to so far (as of 2020)
~ 562kg of paper recycled
~ 408kg of metals recycled
~ 281kg of plastics kept in circulation
~ Approximately 118,000 meals for those in need via @OzHarvest
~ 119L of excess chemicals recycled back into water
~ 84kg of hair collected from the salon floor
~ 70 hair booms (stockings filled with hair) to help soak up oil spills
Another sustainable initiative we have implemented within the salon since July 2019 is a refill & recycling ongoing program we encourage clients to take part in.
Refilling + Recycling with us at Olive
Committed in reducing our carbon footprint on this earth you are able to refill your shampoo & conditioner favourites at Olive.
What our clients need to do;
Bring in your Kevin Murphy or Organic Colour Systems 250ml or 200ml bottles to be re-filled in salon, and they receive a 10% discount off the original price.
Or you can recycle with us too! By bringing in your empty styling or shampoo bottles to receive a 50c discount (for each bottle) off your next retail purchase at Olive.
Did You Know?
That both our retail brands we use and recommend have a mindful sustainable approach towards their packaging and make it their aim to be a part of the plastic waste solution!
Kevin Murphy's product bottles are made from 100% ocean waste plastic! Which is pretty cool! So you know your reusable plastic shampoo bottles have been kept in the repurposing loop! and Organic Colour Systems product bottles are low toxic and made from 100% fully recyclable material.

~ Friends of the Koala – https://friendsofthekoala.org/
~ Wildcare Australia Inc. – https://wildcare.org.au/
~ Aussie Ark – https://www.aussieark.org.au/

We hope to inspire and lead the way forward for all our hairdressing community and beautiful supportive clientele. By continuing to learn, grow and give back at Olive Eco Hair – constantly researching, contributing and finding better ways – to a more positive collective consciousness, of a cleaner and sustainable world.
