The Global Climate Strike on 20th September 2019 was one of the biggest protests in Australian history.
Thousands and thousands of people including our little eco salon in sunny Queensland Australia – Olive Eco Hair, gathered and marched as one to make a stand for the environment and the future of our earth.
Our salon has been using low tox products and implementing sustainability practices for nine years now and has always been mindful of the impact that hair care has on this planet. We use solar power where possible, recycle 95% of our salon waste through Sustainable Salons Australia, and choose products that are naturally derived, organic, toxin free, cruelty-free and vegan.
We made a conscious decision to close our doors from 12PM on Friday 20th of September so that me and my entire team could make a stand and support this incredible and important movement for environmental change.
Before the strike we made banners and had our own business T-shirts made up so we could represent what we are all about! We chose an environmentally aware printing company in Teneriffe called – 'the print bar'. All their garments are from ethically-accontable manufacturers, they use plant-based, home compostable packaging, eco-friendly, water based inks for digital printing and naturally-sourced rayon thread for embroidery. The print bar also recycles their ink cartridges through Planet Ark and donate a percentage of their profits to the Clean Clothes Campaign.
The T-Shirts had our logo on the front and said – "We Give a Crop about Climate Change" And we had our salon's ethos written on the back of the shirt – "We are conscious of the impact that hair care has on this planet! We are choosing a sustainable eco friendly approach that is essential for now and for future generations." We had our sustainable resource program that we support in the salon every week printed on the shirt as well – 'Sustainable Salons Australia'.
Our salon staff and my four year old daughter attended the Brisbane climate strike which saw 35,000 locals march through the streets of the Brisbane CBD to Musgrave Park in West End to hear some amazing movers and shakers of Australia, already making a difference on this land.
It was an absolutely moving experience which gave many moments of goosebumps throughout the afternoon, as so many people came together in unity to make a stand!
Climate Change is real!! and it's not going to go away unless we collectively come together as one and make our voices heard. I believe that people are power! and together we can make that difference.
Closing our doors and not taking appointments for the afternoon was a massive sacrifice, but we sure did make others aware that what we were doing was for the greater good!
We hope to inspire and lead the way forward for our clients and the hairdressing community, by showing that we are serious about making a difference and they can do this, too!
The Global Climate Strike was a one time event and happened on – Friday 20th September 2019.
