Story
L’Elegance Salon, a retrospective
When I opened my salon doors in 1992, I never imagined what a wonderful journey this
business would take me on. The employees and the clients that have come through my doors have molded and shaped me in so many ways. My personal clients have become like family, some having been with me since the beginning. I cherish the time with them in my chair, especially some of my weekly customers. They have seen me through some of the best times, like watching my family grow. They have also seen us through some of the more challenging times in this life. The pandemic imposed a challenging time for the salon and clients. Thankfully, we were able to overcome the challenge of the shutdown because of our supportive clients. When our clients come through our doors, I’m very proud to offer them a comfortable and safe environment. Being a stylist has given me the opportunity to grow my family in a way I may have not have had in another profession. My 4 daughters have been a part of this business since a very young age, sweeping hair, answering phones, or folding towels. More recently, they’ve helped me grow the business through technology and social platforms. My daughter, Noelle, has recently joined me in the salon as a stylist and a makeup artist. I’m very proud of them, to say the least.
Over the years, L’Elegance has tried to give back to the Cheshire and Hamden communities that we service. We had the Bedhead booth at the American Cancer Society sponsored, Cheshire Relay for Life, several years in a row. Our stylists were available for a simple freshening up, or a hair donation haircut at the events. We’ve helped families in need at holiday times by participating in Safe Haven programs. The team sponsored a family in need by purchasing Christmas gifts for a family of 5. The mom of that family was so grateful and overwhelmed. It’s very fulfilling to give to others. We’ve collected items to ship to our Military Service members serving in Afghanistan. We got very nice thank you cards from the troops showing their gratitude for oreos:)) Quinnipiac University is around the corner and often calls us for different charitable events. Specifically, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation head shaving event is always fun to participate in with the Quinnipiac students. We have several clients that run non-profit organizations we try to support. Soul-Friends, a pet-assisted therapy organization, is a favorite. Also, Friends of Boulder Knoll and the JLS Memorial Foundation can always count on our support. Personally, I’ve been awarded the ‘Best of Hamden’ award 3 years in a row. This makes me feel very validated and accomplished. The needs of our environment, and using products like Kevin Murphy, are a priority for our salon. We disapprove of being wasteful, harming animals, and the earth and do what we can to eliminate it. I am very proud of L’Elegance Salon, and the integral part of the community it has become.
Timing
The above description is a synopsis of my 30+ years career as a stylist. It is only a small highlight of how meaningful this type of work has been for me and my family.
