|Description of Your Story|
|I’ve been connected to cats ever since I was a child, however in the last year or two is when I’ve been more serious about volunteering when it comes to stray and abandoned cats.
I’ve been a foster home to quite a few found or abandoned kittens. The cats that have been in my care have been between 15 days to 4 years old. There have been wild cats that need a bit more care and socialization and there have been some really friendly cats. It’s quite obvious that kittens require a lot more work and dedication as they need to be fed with milk mixture (formula) so they get all the nutrients they need for a healthy life. As they don’t have a mother cat to feed or teach them, I often have to take upon the role of being a cat-mom, who teaches them how to play properly, how to use the litter box and all-in-all how to grow to be a healthy, nice cat. There have been quite a lot of sleepless nights, as I’ve bottle fed the kittens every 2-3 hours so I’d say it’s quite challenging to do it when one has a day-to-day job, but the outcome is always worth it. To know you’ve saved a life, that feeling is priceless and no sleepless night can top that. The usual life for a tiny motherless kitten consists of bottle feeding, cleaning and sleeping. I’ve welcomed in my home some really wild kittens, who I’ve had to hold in a kitty-cage and really slowly start to get them adjusted to human presence. The adjusting means petting them from time to time and holding them in my arms. Some seriously wild kittens have turned out to be really adorable and purring cats, who love cuddling and petting. When that happens, it means they are then ready to find themselves a forever home.
I have welcomed more than 20 foster kittens in my home and this year I joined a non-profit organization to help out even more kittens and cats all over Estonia. Two months ago, to help this organization financially, me and my friend started an online shop. In this online shop we sell used clothes and all the money goes to the organization, to help them in their troubled times, as the organization survives solely on peoples’ donations. We promote our shop on Instagram and Facebook for people to donate clothes, shoes and other things to sell, then photograph the items and put them online for people to buy. By doing so, we are keeping the items in circulation, promoting eco-friendly behaviour and helping the organization financially. Every month we gather information about how much we have sold and give all the money to charity to help abandoned cats. I have to say that by now we are doing quite well with the online shop, as we have a lot of donated items and many people are choosing our store to shop from. It feels amazing knowing that every day we’re doing something good for the environment and helpless cats, who have only us to count on.
It’s definitely tiring sometimes and the sleepless nights are quite an often occurrence, however I would not change it for anything. Cats leave pawprints in your heart.
