Story
Hi, my name is Vasily Mikhailov and I am a co-owner of the Colba Color Bar salon. About three years ago, my wife Katya started sorting garbage at home. At first I was skeptical, and then suddenly I saw what a mountain of plastic had grown on the balcony in just 1 month.
I saw it and was horrified at the idea of how much garbage an average family consisting of two adults and a small child can “produce”.
When we took our plastic to the “Collector” and I saw with my own eyes mountains of sorted garbage prepared for recycling, I finally understood that the idea is more than serious.
I decided to study this topic, started watch movies and read books, and finally came to the conclusion that waste sorting is the only way out. My business partner Nastya Popova is a travel blogger.
She travels a lot around the world and is acquainted with some positive examples of eco-initiatives in business. Once we were talking about this topic, and decided to invite “Collector” to our salon.
This is how special stationary containers for separate waste collection appeared at Colba Color bar. They are located in the very center of the hall: we are not ashamed to openly and loudly declare that waste sorting is an important part of life.
Of course, the pandemic made its own adjustments, and we were forced to return some disposable consumables, which we once discarded. Previously, we served tea and coffee only in glassware, now we do it in cardboard (not plastic) cups, offering our customers straw straws.
Yes, it is literary “a drop in the ocean”, but big changes begin with small steps.
We launched another eco-initiative with Kevin Murphy (Australia):
customers who buy branded hair cosmetics can bring empty package back to the salon.
We are planning to create an art installation in Australia made from the empty packaging.
I am very grateful to my wife Katya, who pushed me to make big changes. By the way, she is a clothes designer (@kamirework), she graduated from “British higher school of art and design” and is actively developing the upcycling direction – she sews ultra-fashionable things from old jeans.
Katya was once very impressed by the fact that the production of denim clothes is not the most environmentally friendly process. It takes 3,781 liters of water to create one pair of jeans, and toxic chemical elements are often used during the dyeing process. That is why Katya decided to recycle old jeans, creating incredibly cool things. They are sold like “hotcakes”, which means that people love conscious fashion.
We are planning to launch several more eco-initiatives in our salon very soon. We are very pleased that our clients are receptive to what is happening at Colba. They support us, helping to transform the salon into a place of power for conscious and ethical people.

Timing
About three years ago I realized that it was necessary to act and make changes in my life. The process is on and is evolving.
