Story
Dolly’s Day KRUSH – A Sunday Summer Soirée (for Positive East) – a fund-and-awareness raising event in partnership with local East London businesses for Positive East HIV Charity.
Here at Stunt Dolly, we believe actions speak louder than words, and nowhere is that truer than when trying to make all groups of people feel included, accepted and ultimately seen. There’s too much hate in the world based on the notion that we’re different from each other, and so from the moment we opened our doors, we’ve been on a mission to ensure anyone that walks through them feels comfortable.
As a salon founded by members of the LGBTQI+ community, we’re no strangers to discrimination and exclusion. But rather than dwell on it, we put our energy into ensuring the community is supported, celebrated and stronger for the future. In August 2019, our work in this area came to a head, with an amazing local partnership with HIV charity Positive East.
Positive East is a leading organisation dedicated to raising awareness around the stigma still associated with HIV, with the full intention of squashing it forever. Its work spans from HIV testing and prevention right through to counselling services and long term care, all with the aim of improving the quality of life of individuals and communities affected by HIV.
Each year, Positive East holds its KRUSH event – a fund-and-awareness raising event in partnership with local East London businesses. In 2019, Stunt Dolly was on the roster, alongside many of our neighbours on Kingsland Road. To support the cause, we threw a Sunday Summer Soirée that brought our wonderful customers together under one roof. We offered food from our friends and neighbours Club Mexicana – a vegan Mexican restaurant that fully aligns with our cruelty free ethos.
Drinks came from Weino BiB – a little wine deli in Dalston that specialises in refillable bottles for waste reduction (also on our wavelength) and our raffle saw winners gifted products from all the ethical, organic and cruelty free brands we stock – from Kevin Murphy to Evo Hair. Donated especially for the cause. The event is the biggest we’ve held in the salon in the nine years we’ve been part of the community, and £2000 was raised for Positive East – something we’re incredibly proud to say.
While Covid-19 has put a stop to these types of events for some time now, we only hope to be part of KRUSH again when the time comes. In the meantime, we’ll continue to fight for equality and inclusion in all walks of life, starting with a salon that feels like home.
