Story
Last year, when the world shut down, I was taking an emotional intelligence training course with 36 amazing individuals and leaders. We realized then that many businesses and organizations were not able to survive without being able to operate. We decided as a team that the best way for us to help make a difference was to vote on an organization, set clear intentions on what we wanted to create, and a very intense timeline (keeping us on track). Together, we agreed to support the Mom’s House organization. This organization helps to support single parents who are full time students in various ways. They receive no govt funding and fully rely on its communities involvement and donations. The shut down put them in a very vulnerable position. We agreed that it was important to help since they played such a vital role in its community.
Voted in as Captain, leader of this team and initiative, I helped lead this amazing group of 36 to raise $108,593 in only 21 days! Completely surpassing our original goal of $75k! Together we created digital marketing strategies, viral video content of “pass a heart challenge”, a virtual gala fundraiser and check presentation, and other ways to raise awareness completely online. To this day our link in classy.org is still open and able to take donations for anyone who would continue to support a truly worthy cause. If we didn’t know before, it really only takes a few people to make a big impact, we definitely know now. Our magic number this time just happened to be 37.
My heart has been in philanthropy for a long time. Prior to this project I have been involved with multiple fundraisers each year. This was the most amazing initiative I could have ever experienced. Having such success in helping others during such an unknown time was truly magical.
It gave me the courage to leave my current salon last June, two weeks upon reopening, and open my own. I learned I have a passion for helping others and I can’t wait to help guide others to making big strides as well! It has been great having control over my atmosphere, during a difficult time, and I’ve really learned a lot about my own strength.
I’m also so grateful for Kevin Murphy. I love that I can support a brand that shares my values and I’m proud to talk about all the ways the company helps to make the world a better place! It was a clear choice for me.
Thank you for creating a space for me to share what I’m up to when I’m not behind the chair. What a neat opportunity!
Timing
This event took place starting at the beginning of April last year 2020. The initial goal for the fundraiser was met 21 days later but this is an ongoing project.
