“Life is more beautiful when you meet the right hairdresser.” – Peter Coppola
A beautiful life is what we all strive for. On the surface, having a connection with a great hairdresser is a huge step towards attaining that goal. But the beauty that we show the world is only half the story. The inner beauty of normal people, of imperfect human beings, of anxious and often insecure mothers, sisters, daughters, is what shines most for me.
I have styled so many young things, who've grown up into formidable women, and I've given them their dream wedding looks, and been their guest too. And, then I've been there for the next generation, part of their stories at christenings and other family milestones. I've even been there at the end of lives. Sad but real, and unavoidable. The mascara may have run with tears, but the hair was fabulous.
During the pandemic, we've really seen how appreciated our work is. People all over the world may once have taken the expert attention of their hairdresser for granted. But no more. The government may not have thought us 'essential'. But there is growing clarity around how self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence really are essential. And the art of hair has the power to elevate our everyday experience. It can make us feel, really, palpably sense inside, that we are in a glorious profession. More than essential, we are the artists that evoke emotional responses every single day. We bring joy to life.
“To sculpt a head of hair with scissors is an art form. It’s in pursuit of art.” – Vidal Sassoon
I've been a hair professional for 35 years. From my very first day as a salon junior, to today as colour lead, I've made connections, lived my clients' lives with them, and made true friends. Looking forward to what tomorrow brings…
